In 1976 the organisers awarded the contract for the design of the Innsbruck pictograms to the graphic artist Alfred Kunzenmann. His design was probably influenced by the pictograms of Sapporo and Munich in 1972. Kunzenmann’s idea to develop an individual pictogram for the single, pair, double and four-man competitions in figure skating, bobsleigh and luge was completely new. In contrast to Sapporo’s, the pictogram for the Nordic combined did not show both disciplines, cross-country skiing and ski jumping, but – like Grenoble’s pictogram in 1968 – the respective individual disciplines. The pictogram for biathlon was supplemented with the symbol of the five circles for the Modern Pentathlon, an idea that originated in Munich 1972.
