No official poster was made for the 1896
Olympic games, but the cover page of the official report is often used
to represent the Athens 1896 Games. For the Olympic Games in Paris 1900
being the athletic part of the World Exhibition no specific poster was
created either with the exception of one single event being fencing. The
presented photo of St. Louis 1904 shows the cover of the programmes of
these games. As from London 1908 there has always been one main poster.
Initially there was only the main poster (partially in different
languages). Since the late 1960’ies a surge of posters has been produced
in different categories: sports, advertising, arts, culture,
bid-process, torch relay and volunteering.
