Grenoble 1968 – Sports Pictograms

Designer: Roger Excoffon

This great series of ten sports pictograms was strongly influenced by Op Art. The feeling of speed and movement is created through the integration of the stylised figures in a typical sports pose and the dynamism, black and white lines. The pictograms thus radiate a dynamic that is second to none. This was a completely new approach to designing a pictogram. Not only the functionality should be stressed. The spirit of the times and the movement of the figures, in combination with a high aesthetic value, are also inherent in the design – a remarkable and unique work by Roger Excoffon! In addition to sports pictograms, Excoffon designed one pictogram for the Opening and the Closing Ceremonies. All pictograms were used on tickets and programmes, signs and many souvenirs.
