Garmisch-Partenkirchen 1936 – Sports “Pictograms”

Designer: unknown

Pictograms were developed both for the summer sports in Berlin and for the winter competitions. The designer is unknown. What is special about the pictograms is the fact that, for the first time, a reduced formal language and no illustrations were used. Although they were published in a specialist publication before the Games, the signs were not used, neither on printed matter, admission tickets nor on a signpost. For the first time sports pictograms were used systematically in Tokyo 1964. These sports pictograms are not recognised by the IOC.
