Athens 2004: Sports Pictograms

Designer: TBD

A core task of the Image & Identity Department of the Organising Committee was the design of the 35 sports pictograms – one for each of the 28 competitive sports plus seven for individual disciplines. In order to find inspiration for the three main elements of the pictograms, the designers looked far back in Greek history. The depiction of athletes is based on the simple form in which human figures were drawn in the Cycladic culture of the Aegean (3300 to 1100 BC). The black colour of the figures – together with the white lines – is taken from antique vases, on which figures in black have also been painted. In addition, the orange background and the shape of each sports pictogram are a reference to clay fragments from antiquity. Apart from all these artistic and cultural references to history, the pictograms of Athens 2004 are modern and functional: characteristic motion sequences of the individual sport simply do not permit misinterpretations.
