Atlanta 1996 – Mascot Izzy

Designer: John Ryan

The production and marketing of the mascot Whatizit in the form of various products posed great challenges for those responsible. The implementation and reproduction of the figure’s peculiarities, such as the floating, flashing eyebrows or the star cloud around the head, was particularly difficult. These hurdles prompted the ACOG to investigate the attractiveness of this mascot for children and adolescents with the help of external experts. The result was the central wish of children from all over the USA: make Whatizit more youthful! The ACOG took the children’s desire to heart, reworked John Ryan’s figure and presented the redesign of Whatizit to the public in June 1993. At the same time, the children were allowed to submit their own ideas and wishes for the mascot name. The response to this call was enormous: within two weeks, more than 3,300 name suggestions were submitted from 16 countries. It was ultimately a group of children from Atlanta and the surrounding area who chose Izzy. At about the same time the drawn Izzy became a cartoon character. This animation was created in collaboration with the well-known animation studio Film Roman, Inc. From autumn 1995, a 30-minute “Izzy special” for children and with reference to the Olympic Games was broadcast three times by the animation TV channel TBS. At the time of this TV show, the licensing of the Izzy product range was already underway. These included, for example, bed linen, bags, colouring books, party supplies, pins, soft toys, school supplies, stickers and dishes. Izzy even had his own fan club and visited schools and other communities as an Olympic ambassador. Probably the biggest Izzy floated as a huge balloon over New York City from 1993 to 1995 on the occasion of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parades, watched by an estimated 65 million television viewers each year. The same balloon floated over Atlanta during the Games.
