Hardly any other sign of victory has such symbolic power as the olive branch. In ancient Olympia the winners of the competitions had already been crowned with the branch of the holy olive tree.
It is therefore only logical that this symbol was chosen as the main feature of the 2004 emblem, reflecting the four core values of the Athens Games: heritage (as stated above), participation,
celebration and human scale. The design of the wreath as an open circle should be understood as an invitation to all nations to participate in the Olympic Games, the largest peaceful competition
worldwide. The olive wreath of the emblem is sketched by hand in white and shaded in blue, which is in turn reminiscent of the sea and sky of Greece.
