The mascot of the Sarajevo Games represents a wolf, an animal native to the forests of the Dinaric Alps. With his some- times smiling, sometimes frightened or serious facial expression Vučko gave the predator a friendly look and even helped to change the widespread image of the “bad” wolf. The fever over the choice of the mascot did not only last for months in Yugoslavia, but rose steadily. 836 artists took part in the competition. The Organising Committee allowed readers of daily newspapers and magazines to chose the winning mascot from among the six best proposals. In the end, the wolf “Vučko”, a drawing by Slovenian artist Jože Trobec, won the vote. Five of the “voters” were rewarded with a ticket to the Winter Games by drawing lots.
