Pictograms

The Olympic Games are gathering for about three weeks in a given place millions of people from all four corners of the world. To help this international public to find its way to the competition venues and the various services (post, restaurants, banks, clinic, etc.), Games Organizing Committees make use of pictograms – graphic symbols which should be immediately understood by anyone.

The first pictograms appeared at the IV. Olympic Winter Games in Garmisch Partenkirchen, Germany in 1936. They were used systematically from the Games of the XVIII. Olympiad in Tokyo in 1964 onwards.

I have chosen the the pictograms of Field Hockey (Summer Olympics) and Ice Hockey (Winter Olympics) for a better comparison of the different designs.
